Nerve Fiber Layer Imaging

Gdx_slide_show

Glaucoma is a disease that causes a degeneration of the nerve fibers leading to the optic nerve.  This instrument allows us to take a specialized image of these nerve fibers to help us make the diagnosis of glaucoma and to monitor the progression of the disease over time.   This is used along with other testing to allow us to come up with the best treatment plan available. This picture represents a printout from a specialized camera that evaluates the optic nerve fibers inside the eye. A normal eye has thick fibers above and below the optic nerve coming from the retina. The thin green (for right eye) and purple (for left eye) lines fall within the normal range of the wider bands in the bottom graph as seen to the left.
