Dr. Kaplan received his undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis and his Doctor of Optometry degree from the State University of New York College of Optometry. After graduation, he completed a Fellowship in Cornea and Contact Lenses and a Masters of Science in Vision Science also from SUNY/Optometry. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and the International Association of Contact Lens Educators. He is a Past President of the New York Academy of Optometry and still serves on the Board of Directors.
Dr. Kaplan is the co-Director of Eye Care Unlimited which was started with his classmate, Dr. Contento in 1992. Since then, they have been serving the Bronx community with quality comprehensive eye care for the entire family. Dr. Kaplan has extensive experience in primary eye care, ocular disease management, dry eye, refractive surgery care and contact lenses. As a consultant for many pharmaceutical and contact lens manufacturers, Dr. Kaplan is considered an authority in the area of anterior segment disease and contact lenses. He is a well-known lecturer and has been published in many scientific journals.
Dr. Kaplan is an Associate Clinical Professor at SUNY College of Optometry where he has been the Section Chief of Cornea, Contact Lenses and Refractive Technlolgies since 1997. He is also an Attending within the Cornea service at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary where he is the Director of Contact Lens Services. His main focus in these affiliations is treating patients with keratoconus, post surgical fits, pediatric patients in need of contact lenses, cosmetic/prosthetic lenses or patients who have been difficult to fit with lenses for any reason. He has taught over 1400 optometry students and over 100 ophthalmology residents in his 20 years of teaching.
When not working, he enjoys spending time with his family. He has 3 daughters who are competitive swimmers and 1 who is a competitive Irish step dancer. They keep him busy with all of their activities!
